Blackwell writes both parts with a fairl y high tessitura, and both require melodic and rhythmic independence as they sing pleasing melodies. A contrasting B section in the parallel minor key leads to a recapitulation of th e original melody with a soaring intensity on the words "I believe in God even when He is silent." The text is based on a poem written on a cellar wall in Nazi Germany by Jewish children. It is possible for two sopranos to sing it as a duet as another possibility.
