Brock Wakefield Downward was born (1946) in Bryn Mawr, PA and raised in Greenwich, Connecticut. He sang in the Men and Boy Choir of Christ Episcopal Church, later becoming the Assistant Organist under his teacher, Claude Means. He attended Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, where he studied organ with Garth Peacock and the Eastman School of Music, where he earned the M.Mus. and D.M.A. degrees studying with David Craighead. From 1969-1971 he served in the U.S. Army as a chaplain’s assistant at Ft. Richardson, Alaska. He married Polly Norman in 1973 and was the Director of Music at Twelve Corners Presbyterian Church, Rochester, NY from 1973-1976. For thirty years (1976-2006) he served as Director of Music at White Memorial Presbyterian Church, Raleigh, North Carolina, where he holds the title of Director of Music Emeritus. He also served on the adjunct faculty of the music department at Meredith College, teaching organ, harpsichord and choral conducting. He is a past president of the Presbyterian Association of Musicians and directed the 1998 Montreat Conferences on Worship and Music. Upon retirement from White Memorial he was presented with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest award which can be granted to a civilian by the Governor of North Carolina. He presently resides in Raleigh, North Carolina.
