Thornburg, John

John Thornburg is a pastor, a song enlivener, a poet and a professional encourager. He began his ministry serving four different churches in greater Dallas including an inner city cooperative parish. That cooperative work resulted in the revitalization of six congregations, as well as the creation of a network of ministries that served 30,000 people per year.

John is a published poet whose texts appear in 20 different hymnals and collections of Christian worship songs. His mentors include 25 year old entrepreneurs, 80 year old wisdom givers and lots of people in between.

In January of 2005, John was invited by the mission director of the new United Methodist mission in Cameroon, West Africa, to assist the 30 Cameroonian United Methodist churches in the production of their first hymnal/worship book.

John is now senior area consultant for the Texas Methodist Foundation, meeting pastors and matching them with the resources they need to reach their truest and deepest purpose.

John is the Immediate Past President of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada, and co-founder of a community of creativity in Dallas called HOLY CITY, devoted to writing worship songs for the church.

He and his wife, Beth, a law professor at Southern Methodist University, live in Dallas.
